SURGEDAT is the world’s storm surge data center. This site has now archived the location and height of more than 700 tropical surge events around the world since 1880. In addition, we have identified more than 8,000 unique high water marks from tropical surges along the U.S. Gulf and Atlantic Coasts.
These data were mostly built from scientific sources, including government reports, historic maps, academic papers and books. In addition, anecdotal sources, such as thousands of pages of newspaper, provide data for smaller-magnitude storm surges in the earlier part of the record. This rich storm surge history is valuable for emergency management personnel, coastal scientists, storm surge modelers, forecasters, planners, insurance professionals and coastal stakeholders.
